Five key ways to make your photography shine:

1. Know Your Software
Hone your ‘developing’ skills to where you can take an image and get the very best out of it in your digital darkroom. This is a vital capability whether you want to be primarily a ‘photographer’ or an ‘image-maker’ and allows you to take greater control over your work so it’s the very best that it can be. This means choosing a solid piece of editing software and learning how to use it to its full potential. It doesn’t mean buy the most expensive thing and learn that – you have to choose something that best suits your interests and needs. Be prepared to change your mind.

2. Get the Basics Right
You need to know composition, exposure and how to utilise your camera to get the most out of it. It doesn’t matter much what camera you’re using, if you don’t really know how to point it then you’re going to struggle to get anything good out of it. Know your manual and what your camera can (and can’t) do. Study and understand phenomena like depth of field, focal planes and shutter speeds. This stuff can get geeky and bit dull at times but it will help you to understand how to produce a particular effect or look when you start to frame in your mind what you want an image to look like in its final form.

3. Be Flexible
It’s easy to get stuck in a rut taking the same kind of shots and processing them in the same way over and over again. Or just adopting one set of tools and failing to implement new ones as and when they become available. Developing your work means that you do need to develop the way you work. This means being conscious of issues such as workflow and how they impact on your ability to produce good images. Just like the dodo, if you fail to evolve you fail to survive in that will you fail to keep your interest in photography in general but you also need to be able to innovate and change if you’re really going to produce some impressive images.

4. Study Others’ Work
Art rarely develops in isolation, the work of other people can be key in helping you to develop your style, hone your skills and increase your knowledge. Spend time every day looking at the work of others, thinking about how they created a specific look or effect and work out how you could replicate it. An important tool for the modern photographer is networking with other photographers on-line or in real life. On-line communities such as Facebook, Twitter and Flickr are a great way to get your work ‘out there’ but are an even better resource for inspiration and discussion. They even allow you to engage in collaborative projects which will boost your skills and experience substantially. In real life, you should check out your local camera club or photo-walk group. Interacting with other photographers in the flesh is a great way to learn new things and increase your engagement with photography overall, it might give you access to new shooting opportunities and equipment and will certainly challenge the way you see your own photography.

5. Practice
You can read all the books, internet sites or magazine articles you like but there’s no substitute for actually picking up your camera and using it. Passion for photography comes from the feeling of having created something unique and interesting with your camera – be that a single image, a small portfolio or an entire body of work. There is just no substitute for picking your camera up and pointing it at things in earnest and ideally, you should be using your camera as a portal to show others something you yourself passionate about. Having the ability to show something you love in a new and visually exciting way onlycomes with practice and thus practice is the thing that more that anything else will make your photographs stand out from the crowd. Go do that now!

20 Quick Street Photography Tips ~ extracted from: digital-photography-school

•Less is More – don’t take too much equipment and travel light. It’ll make you less obtrusive and you will be able to move around for the best shot quickly.

•Off the Beaten Track – don’t just go to all the touristy shots – try to get ‘behind the scenes’ and ‘real life’ scenes.

•Stolen Moments – anticipate moments between people before they happen.

•True Colours – black and white is often where it’s at with street photography but at times colourful situations arise and can really make a shot – be on the look out for these.

•In the Background – what’s goign on behind your subject can actually ‘make’ the shot. Billboards, signs, graffiti and other visual elements can really make a statement in a shot.

•Dare to Go Diagonal – don’t just hold your camera horizontally – experiment with angles. Street photography is a less formal medium – make the most of it.

•Opposites Attract – shots which challenge the ‘norm’ in terms of composition and story/subject matter can be powerful. Look out for ’surprising’ subject matter and composition.

•What a Performance – street performers, parades and other street entertainment can be great subject matter on the street.

•Off the Streets – other places where people gather in number can lead to great shots in this genre – zoos, fairs, shows, parks, sporting events etc all can be worth trying.

•New Angle – find ways to get up high or down low – these new perspectives on subjects that are familiar can lead to eye catching shots.

•Practice makes Perfect – over time and with practice your photography will improve. You’ll not only get better at technique but also spotting the things to focus upon on the street.

•Fortune Favors the Brave – sometimes the best thing you can do is to get close to your subject – this can be a little confronting but will produce powerful images

•Fun in the Sun – often we try to avoid shooting into the sun and the shadows that direct sunlight can produce – in street photography breaking these ‘rules’ can lead to great shots.

•Ready to Pounce – have your camera out and ready to shoot at all times. Things can move quickly on the street so if you’re not ready you’ll miss lots of opportunities.

•Revise the Revisit – street photography is not all about spontaneity – if you see a scene with potential don’t be afraid to keep coming back to it until you get the shot.
•Frozen Motion – the street is a place of movement – to capture it and still get sharp shots make sure your shutter speed is fast enough. 1/125 or more with an ISO of 400 is what this article recommended as a base. I also think it can be fun to experiment with slower shutter speeds on the street – capture the movement as blur.

•Street Wallpaper – blend in with the scene – shoot unobtrusively and unnoticed.

•Life Through a Lens – ‘exaggerating perspective will help set your subject in context and provide a more forgiving depth of field’ – use a wide angle lens (or even a fisheye).

•Expect the Expected – people can be suspicious of street photographers so shoot in places where people expect to see people doing photography. Smile, be polite and be willing to delete images if people protest.

•Location, Location, Location – really this is what it is all about. Choose places where people interact with one another and times when they are present.

Ankle sprain and Strep throat (twice??))
firstly, i am so sorry it's taken me so long to post about my Japan trip.. its a wonderful and enjoyable trip I had with my family! the people we met there were so friendly and awesome! We spent three days at Osaka, two days at kobe, one day at USJ. I had a great time and i think we took the most train rides in this trip. My only regret is that i have load of pictures I took, but i do not yet found the time to sort most of it yet and post it as I was down and out. Will do it during this short holiday break and post soonest possible.

Project 1: Altered Canvas

firstly I started by painting the canvas, then I embossed slightly on the edge of the canvas to give it some dimensions, then I cut out the Artsy Urban big butterfly and the pink and black border strip, used the distress ink in tea dye to inked the edge a little.

Then I assembled and layer them onto each other. Lastly, I adhere the epoxy stickers onto some patterned paper to create a border and cut them out and adhere them with pop-up glue onto the canvas, and added the glass paperclip. Here you got yourself a beautiful canvas home decor or wall mounted decorative piece for your beautiful home or friends.

Project 2 : Mini Mail-Tin Box

For the mini tin mail-box, I cut out a 4" x 12" yellow patterned paper from the balance Artsy Urban big butterfly patterned paper, adhere it onto the tin mail-box and adhered the side with ribbons, then i adhere a die-cut border, and embellished further with epoxy stickers, dew drops and blings, lastly I tied some assorted pink ribbons to the flag, and here you got a cute little mini tin mail box for decor or as the holder for a mini book for your beautiful work :)

Remember that your subjects deserve your respect whenever you photograph them… whether it’s your own kiddos, friends or on hire.

If you’ve got a subject or two or more who are just plain uncomfortable, seek out privacy for the shoot as much as possible. If you’ve got something in your head that you’re working towards and your subject just isn’t diggin’ it… drop it and move on to something else.

Do not shoot your subject in "weird" situation even if you think its funny or cute! caused other might not share the same sentiments.

Ultimately you want nice pictures AND a nice memory of the shoot as a whole.

From digital & Ed... some good advise I strongly agreed :

Curious photographers are always asking questions.
Questions of other photographers, questions about their own work, questions about their cameras, questions of their subjects etc..

As a result their often learn things about their art (and themselves) that the rest of us don’t and their work improves because of it.

So go find someone with the same camera as you and ask them how they use it.
Or find a photographer from a different genre to you and ask them about their techniques.
Look back over your last month’s photos and ask yourself what you did well (and not so well)
and lastly learn from it...

What I leant during my last photography lesson with Master Lee?

we knew that:
Photography is all about light, and properly exposing an image has to do with letting just the right amount of light into the camera.

So..
What is an Aperture?
* The wider the aperture opening, the more light will enter the camera.
* The smaller the aperture opening, the less light will enter the camera.

What is shutter speed?
* The slower the shutter speed, the more light will enter the camera.
* The faster the shutter speed, the less light will enter the camera.

What is ISO?
* The higher the ISO setting, the more sensitive your camera will be to light.
* The lower the ISO setting, the less sensitive your camera will be to light.

i've been wanting to learn some new crafts, i want to take weaving class, i want to take pottery class, i want to learn to sew clothes for my daughter, i want to learn to sew quilt, i want to learn how to cook good food for missy (no more soup soup soup), i want to take a pilates or yoga class to reduce fat :p, i want to go to scandinavia again with missy and hub, i want to finish my second master(which is long overdue, with only 5 subjects to go but i m just so not into it), i want to learn to ride a horse or at least have the guts to go up on a horse back, i want to open a little childcare center, i want to wake up without being a nasty monster, i want to go on shopping holidays with my girlfriends, i want a scrap room, i want to work less, i want to have and do so many things ...

there are just not enough hours in the day, if i can buy the hours by the jars, i will do it without second thots but i dont have the money too...hahahah

however, it still nice to have dreams...

BE A SUCCESS

Everyone wants to be a success in life! The world defines success in terms of achieving one's goal, acquiring wealth, status, prestige and power, and successful people are seen to be enjoying the good life.

In short, money, power and status are pivotal to the definitions of success in our society today. Such definitions are fatally flawed especially when we consider the lives of the rich and famous whose lives are quite often wrecked by pain and tragedies. thus, think, what is sucess to you? being rich? have certain status, power or like some...being famous?

to me : being able to share and the chance to contribute back to the society is a sucess and blessings to me.. how abt you?

we had our annual easter funz celebration at the cc recently, co-org by wec, yec and rc zones...

and this round the challenge from the SB interest group to the challenger was to alter a cheeseboard, all material provided exclude the picture of course...

here's the finished projects done by the challengers and some of the kids are below 8yrs old and sure are very very creative...

we had other events for the kids too, like candle making, butterflies painting, loop the eggs, easter eggs painting and even a huge snake and ladder game...

always loves the smiles and looks rec'd from these kids when we did this social event

a big thank you to the sponsors and all helpers for this successful event.
and am happy to be able to share my interest and skills (SB) to these kids ...

the next charity event would be on the 6th of June at the Metta Special School, do drop by to support us (SB interest group), we will be having demo on simple pages creation and also help selling AC page kit at a very low price to help raise fund for these special children, so please drop by if you are nearby.. the addy is Simei St 1 - Metta Special School.

Snarling at Me - by Ernst Vikne

This is a fun technique to try or any composition where you want to enthuse dram or action. For this to work you’ll need a DSLR or hybrid camera with a zoom lens. First of all set your ISO as low as possible and dial in a small aperture of around f22 for a longer exposure. Isolate a subject – for example a willing model, a beautiful blooming flower, an insect, etc and focus on and meter from this. Next compose so the subject is positioned in the centre of your frame.

Unwind your lens so it is zoomed out as far as possible. As soon as you hit the shutter use your left hand to scroll the lens back in. Check the LCD to judge your results and experiment with the speed at which you zoom in to create different effects. Also try starting with the zoom as wide as possible and during the exposure zoom in to your subject for a variation of results.

something that i feel is worth sharing , something that we do often taken for granted.

This is about a man who tells how his booking an air ticket for his father, his first flight, brought emotions and made him realize that how much we all take for granted when it comes to our parents.

My parents left for our native place on Thursday and we went to the airport to see them off. In fact, my father had never travelled by air before, so I just took this opportunity to make him experience the same.

In spite of being asked to book tickets by train, I got them tickets on Lufthansa.

The moment I handed over the tickets to him, he was surprised to see that I had booked them by air. The excitement was very apparent on his face, waiting for the time of travel. Just like a school boy, he was preparing himself on that day and we all went to the airport, right from using the trolley for his luggage, the baggage check-in and asking for window seat and waiting restlessly for the security check-in to happen.

He was thoroughly enjoying himself and I, too, was overcome with joy watching him experience all these things.

As they were about to go in for the security check-in, he walked up to me with tears in his eyes and thanked me. He became very emotional and it was not as if I had done something great but the fact that this meant a great deal to him. When he said thanks, I told him there was no need to thank me.

As a child how many dreams our parents have made come true? Without understanding the financial situation, we ask for football, dresses, toys, outings, etc. Irrespective of their affordability, they have satisfied to all our needs. Did we ever think about the sacrifices they had to make to accommodate many of our wishes?

Did we take things for granted after all that they have done for us?

Same way, today when it comes to our children, we always think that we should put them in a good school, give them this and that.

Regardless of the amount of donation, etc. we will ensure that we will have to give the child the best, theme parks, toys, etc. But we tend to forget that our parents have sacrificed a lot for our sake to see us happy, so it is our responsibility to ensure that their dreams are realized and what they failed to see when they were young, it is our responsibility to ensure that they experience all those and their life is complete too.

Looking at the post from Zack, it reminds me of those regrets that I have till todate to my late mother...

Before the week she passed away (my mother passed away suddently due to heart failure during one of my trip overseas) she have had asked me to have dinner with her in a new resturant when my schedule permitted...and also to go for a short tour with her (at that time, I was a busy carreer woman who had to travel very much for biz trips)and told her will do it after I came back from biz trip ...

If I have had dinner before I travel .... if i had ..... if i had....

Thus : Take care of our parents. Don't take them for granted and make them feel small and unwanted in their old age.
They too have feelings/dreams/hope/aspirations/wishes (sometime just simple wishes), treasure the moments with them now.
